Streamlining Student Progress Monitoring for Better Support and Success

Success Mentors and instructors at V School were having a hard time tracking student progress because they had to jump between multiple platforms like Airtable and Google Sheets. This made it tough to get a clear picture of how students were doing and to step in with support when it was needed. The goal was to bring all the data together in one simple dashboard, making it easier for staff to stay on top of student performance and offer help at the right time.

As the UX Designer, I led research to understand staff challenges in tracking student progress. By analyzing pain points and workflows, I identified the need for a centralized solution. I worked with stakeholders to design a user-friendly dashboard that consolidated student data, allowing staff to efficiently monitor progress and offer timely support

The Struggle to Track Student Progress

Staff members were forced to navigate multiple platforms to gather critical student data, such as progress and story points, which hindered their ability to offer timely support to struggling students.

Quick Insights for Monitoring Student Progress

During interviews, Success Mentors and staff emphasized that the most crucial data points for tracking student progress include story points, pace, and recent performance trends. They expressed the need for a centralized dashboard that provides a quick overview of all this information, allowing them to easily see which students are ahead or behind in their progress.

Visualizing Student Progress and Key Metrics

The initial design focuses on developing a centralized dashboard that consolidates data from Airtable and Google Sheets and showcases key student progress metrics.

Very Early Concept

Laying the Groundwork for Comprehensive Student Monitoring

A centralized student progress dashboard gives staff the ability to track story points, pace, and overall progress across the student population. Data gathered from Success Mentors and other staff indicated the importance of easily accessible metrics, leading to the decision to prominently display key indicators such as weekly story points, daily and weekly progress, and course completions. This data-driven approach ensures that the dashboard provides comprehensive insights, allowing staff to make informed decisions and offer timely support that’s tailored to each student’s learning journey.

Final Design

A Strong Approval Rating Confirmed We Were on the Right Track.

Usability testing revealed that 100% of Success Mentors found the new system significantly improved their ability to track student progress. This streamlined access to key metrics also led to an increase in timely interventions for students falling behind, allowing mentors to provide support more effectively and at the right moments.

Lessons Learned

Additional feedback from staff could have led to deeper insights. Involving more team members in the research process would definitely help improve future iterations and create better solutions.
